Health and Safety Concerns from Leakage at Carbon Sequestration Sites
Conducted by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, this study of underground storage of natural gas revealed that gases, such as CO2, stored underground can leak sideways for long distances underground and can leak vertically to the surface with “fast gas travel times.” In scientific language, the researchers wrote “…[W]e conclude that although the maximum surface flux of CO2 appears to be quite small, the maximum surface mole fraction of CO2 does appear to pose a significant health risk.”
